Description - Renault R-35
The Renault R-35 was a popular French light infantry tank (Char léger modle 1935R) from the early period of World War II. It was the successor to the aging Renault FT-17, a tank that had served since the Great War. The R-35 featured a modern design and, for its time, good armor protection. However, its disadvantages included an underpowered engine and a one-man turret that forced the commander to handle multiple tasks usually assigned to several crew members in other tanks. The 37 mm gun, also a relic of the Great War, no longer offered high effectiveness.
Poland purchased 100 Renault R-35 tanks from France. In July 1939, the first batch of about 50 units arrived and was deployed in September 1939. Facing defeat, some tanks were redirected to Romania and Hungary. The second batch of 50 tanks did not reach Poland in time.
